4 Things to Know About Oaxaca and Its People

Take a culture trip down to Oaxaca and know about this beautiful place and its people. Oaxaca is a state in the South of Mexico that is inhabited by indigenous people, most of whom are pure Native Americans hailing from different tribes. Oaxaca has the most number of indigenous people after the Yucatan people. These were the people who were present before the Spanish invasion. Here are 4 things about Oaxaca that you probably didn’t know:
1.) They Speak Many Languages
There are 16 main tribes or groups that speak a mix or a variety of languages. These languages developed over the centuries as different tribes moved in. There are over 20 languages with over 50 dialects varying from region to region. Oaxacan people boast a diverse culture and their languages represent that. The most widely spoken are Mixtec, Nahuati and Poploca.
2.) They Have Delicious Food
Since Oaxaca has vast mountain ranges, different areas have different climates. Hence, the local cuisine includes a diverse range of foods. Oaxacan state is also a coastal area, so it is famous for seafood. You get to taste spicy gravies, beans with meat, fish, a variety of bread types and rice. Tlayuda, mescal and chapulines are some of the most popular dishes there.
3.) Their Art Is Exceptional
If you ever want to see brightly colored art that represents a culture perfectly, then Oaxacan artwork fits the bill. It is intricate, gorgeous, detailed and lovely to look at.
4.) There Is a Rich History
Oaxaca has become a popular tourist destination for many who want to explore Mexico City. Travel a bit to the south, and you will be overwhelmed by the beautiful architecture, historical sites and festivals.
