Folk Artist Spotlight - Zeny Fuentes
October 8, 2013
Zeny Fuentes is a Zapotec Indian and fourth generation woodcarver from San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico. He began carving and painting when he was seven years old. Sr. Fuentes works closely alongside his wife Reyna who often adds her own touch allowing this dynamic duo to create some of the most detailed and memorable Oaxacan carvings available today. No two carvings are exactly alike and every figure is sure to add a vibrant artist's touch to any decor.
La Fuente Imports is proud to feature several of Senor Fuentes pieces of whimsical folk art; however one of our favorite pieces is the amazing Peacock he has created. The peacock is a spectacular piece of hand-made Oaxacan art. Sr. Fuentes carefully hand-carved the peacock and its feathers from wood of the copal tree and then hand-painted each piece in stunning detail with a very steady hand and brilliant acrylic colors. The individual feathers are each uniquely painted and come separate from the body. The peacock is such an eye-catching piece it will brighten and intensify any space.
If you're on a budget then consider one of the fun and affordable pieces of hand-made Oaxacan art which we offer including the Blue Cat, Sunflower Lizard or Coyote figures. All are carefully hand-carved from wood of the copal tree and then hand-painted. Each figure offers stunning details and brilliant color!
