Tin Glass Nichos for Home Altars
August 11, 2014
La Fuente Imports online catalog offers a beautiful selection of Religious Folk Art from Mexico, including our popular Tin & Glass Nichos. Traditional nichos are considered household altars and usually depict religious figures such as the Virgin of Guadalupe or patron saints, but can vary with other themes like Day of the Dead and Loteria. They are used as altars for protection or devotional objects.
Common structural conventions include hinged doors, carved borders, and multiple panels. Within the box there is a key object or central figure for whose honor or memory the nicho has been created. Nichos are usually painted with striking colors, often contrasting bright and dark, and tend towards garish. In addition to painted designs, nichos are decorated with all variety of images and objects from religious and popular culture.
Some of our favorite designs include the Arched San Miguel Nicho, the Orange Sacred Heart Nicho as well as the Day of the Dead-inspired El Tenorio Nicho.
Each Mexican Nicho is expertly handmade from tin and glass with beautifully painted depictions for you to enjoy for years to come.
