Using Feng Shui in Your Mexican Home

September 26, 2014

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese system that handles the order of things based on heaven and earth acting harmoniously to get positive energy called Qi. The idea is that all physical objects influence our lives. By changing, eliminating or adding to our surroundings, we promote change. One common misconception of using Feng Shui in your home is that it will involve making your home look more Asian inspired. One of the ways in which Feng Shui works is in paying attention to balancing the elements: fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. Most Mexican homes naturally incorporate these elements into the home since representing the nature and the elements are crucial to Mexican design.

The element of water is associated with emotional sensitivity and positive thought. Courtyards in Mexican homes incorporate fountains or pools of water, and this is where families congregate after the sun goes down to cool off from the hot day. Water should be used in areas where the family congregates and relaxes. Mexican design calls upon the use of bright, vivid colors, especially reds, oranges and burnt ochre's. These colors also satisfy the fire element in Feng Shui. Fire is related to action, motivation, passion and intelligence. It energizes and activates. It is good to place these colors where communication between people is to take place and in working areas to stimulate activity, learning and intellectual development. Mexican homes also use many candles and allow for a lot of natural light to be spilled into the home which works with this element.

In Feng Shui, wood is connected to personal growth and stability. It contributes to a positive environment because of its organic nature. It is also an important element in the Mexican home. Interior design in Mexico calls for rustic ornamental wood furniture and most homes include hardwood floors in at least one room, if not throughout. Hardwood floors featured throughout the entire home bring its inhabitants closer to harmonious balance. Earth is represented by the clay and terracotta commonly used in the Mexican home, as well as any kind of stone or crystals present. This earth element is used to provide moral support and strengthen the spirit. Many accessories in the Mexican home are made from wrought iron or metal. These items include candlesticks, lighting fixtures and picture frames. This fulfills the metal requirement in Feng Shui and brings power and success into financial affairs.
