Is it Copper or is it Art?

August 28, 2015

Is it Copper or is it Art? That indeed is the question. These unique rustic handmade copper vases are just stunning. Not only do they come in a variety of designs, but the texture of each individual piece is a work or art. Usable art, the possibilities are endless with these handcrafted pieces. Each swing the hammer makes a statement on these select pieces.

All of our handcrafted artisan vases are hammered from a single piece of copper; no soldering, casting, or molds are used. Due to the extreme handmade nature of these vases each one is unique in color, shape and texture. While the shape and design will be similar, no two vases will be exactly alike.

Thirty-two years ago Hugo Martinez Velazquez started working with copper under the apprenticeship of his father and older brother. Once his apprenticeship was completed he ventured out on his own, starting a small shop with his children that has won many awards and honors in copper handicrafts.

The artisans of Santa Clara del Cobre use recycled copper sourced from Michoacan. The copper is gathered and then melted down into large ingots. The ingots are then divided and hammered down into the shape of a pancake or "tejos". Using the tejos, artisans begin the heating and hammering process to shape the copper until the outer edges begin to rise up and resemble a bowl.

The roughly shaped bowl, known as a "vaso rustico," is then expertly shaped with hammers, anvils, and stakes. The artisans will hammer the piece from the inside to get the basic shape of the finished piece, but after the sides are raised, they will move the vessel to a metal stake and begin the hammering process from the outside. This step is what brings out the individual personality of each piece.
