Folk Art Spotlight - Oaxacan Woodcarvings
September 3, 2013
The spectacular detailing and bright colors featured on each Oaxacan Woodcarving make eye-catching pieces of folk art that will add an artist's touch to any part of your home.
Two hundred miles south of Mexico City sits a cluster of villages in the state of Oaxaca where an uncommon phenomenon is taking place. A whimsical variety of hand carved, brightly colored wooden figures have single-handedly transformed the way of life and brought fame to an impoverished area previously known only for farming. While locals refer to these figures as Alebrijes, meaning "fantasies" or "figments of the imagination", internationally they're known simply as Oaxacan Woodcarvings.
Oaxaca, Mexico is now world renowned for its copal wood carvings that are sourced, carved and painted by individual artists entirely by hand. The skill and artistry is usually passed down from generation to generation with certain family members developing and fostering their own special style.
La Fuente offers the work of numerous accomplished Oaxacan woodcarvers including Demetrio Cortes, Martin Pacheco, Moises Cortez, Zeny Fuentes, Bili Mendoza, Jacobo Cortes, Carlos Morales as well as several upcoming artists. Our artist's collective represents the largest selection of Oaxacan Woodcarvings available anywhere on the web.
