Folk Artist Spotlight - Jose Mendez

September 3, 2013

Come celebrate the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead (El Dia de Los Muertos), with these funky, handmade pieces of art by Jose Mendez! Each creation is a delicately crafted, one-of-a-kind clay figure which is made with metal wires, then intricately decorated in bright acrylic colors.

Artist, Jose Mendez, creates each art piece by hand in his southern Mexico home. The finished art is an excellent example of traditional Mexican Folk Art. Mendez' artwork is inspired by Mexico's annual Day of the Dead celebrations, which take place October 31 - November 2 in homes and villages throughout Mexico.

Each year in early November the people of Mexico gather in their local cemeteries to honor dearly departed loved ones and to celebrate the continuity of life. Traditions surrounding this holiday vary from region to region, but in many homes "ofrendas," or temporary alters, are constructed to bear flowers, bread, fruit, candy, cigarettes and even tequila as offerings for the dead. Handmade skeleton figures called "calacas" are also popular, as they depict an active and joyful afterlife.

La Fuente Imports is proud to offer the largest variety of Day of the Dead figurines available anywhere on the web, some relatively simple but others painstakingly produced by hand, as well as many other unique Day of the Dead collections including: tiles, night lights, shirts, sugar skull molds, and gifts for kids.
