Handmade Fused Glass Crosses

February 17, 2014

The iconic cross is one of the most ancient human symbols, and has been used by many religions, most notably Christianity. Used for centuries in churches, the cross is now a very common element in home design. If you've been contemplating an addition to your cross collection, or purchase your first one, then consider our Fused Glass Cross selections. These crosses offer translucency, sparkle, and durability which are sure to bring beauty to your home.

Each cross is handmade by renowned glass artist Judy Fuentes and is nearly 20" tall. Judy creates each dramatic Fused Glass Cross at her studio in Trinidad, CO. Her crosses are formed from large and small pieces of Bullseye art glass. She cuts the shapes and assembles them, then fuses each piece in a kiln to 1500 degrees. Molded shapes are then fired a second time to 1350 degrees.

The dramatic visuals are created as light plays through the varying glass materials, which are fused together in a high-temperature, ceramic kiln. The center ornaments are made of dichroic glass containing metal oxides, the top layer is iridescent glass for the chameleon effect, and the main body is translucent glass with a different colored edge.

Fused Glass Crosses are especially stunning in direct light, so be sure to hang them near a light source like a window for maximum effect and glow! A loop of hammered copper wire is fused between two layers of glass for easy hanging.
