Making the Most out of Small Spaces

March 4, 2016

Making the Most out of Small Spaces - Let's face it. We don't all have the money to knock down a wall simply to make a room bigger. Why not do the next best thing? Redesign your small space to make it appear larger. By using certain interior design techniques, you can add depth and functionality to your space while giving it the much-needed attention it deserves. Combine the following basic elements to your small space to turn your room into a more relaxing place for you and your family to enjoy:

Color - Make sure the paint you choose is a high glossy paint so that it reflects light and makes the room appear larger. Choosing the right color can open up a room and give it a new tone. Use lighter colors. Opt for light shades of blues, greens, or yellows in lieu of plain white. Be wary of darker colors, which can make the space feel smaller. If you prefer a deeper color, try painting one wall a dark color. The accent wall can - when surrounded by lighter colors - add depth to the room.

Lighting - If you have a window in the room you're redesigning, use it to your advantage. The use of natural night can really make an impact on the feel of the space. Use track lighting or a bright lighting fixture placed in a central area to brighten up your space if there is no window. A small lamp could also assist in making the space look larger.

Rustic Furniture - When looking for furniture to place in your small space try round pieces, such as a table or a comfortable chair. The smaller the piece the better. Smaller furniture can use less space to open up the room. And always remember to choose furniture that reflects your personal style.

Mexican Mirrors - Give your small space a mirror. This inexpensive technique can be just what your room needs. In addition to adding depth to the space, mirrors also add light to a room from their reflection. Be creative when choosing your mirror. Don't be afraid to buy a mirror that has an odd shape or style. Also remember not to purchase something too large; it can make the mirror the focal point of the space.

Decorating - The best advice when decorating your small space? Keep it simple. Don't overwhelm the space with too many odds and ends. Place no more than two pictures on each wall. By adding less decoration to your room, the space will feel more open and inviting to you and your guests.
