Sacred Heart Mirrors are more than just Decor

February 2, 2016

The Sacred Heart is a heart that suffers, or at least has suffered in the past, yet is still alive, gives off light, brightens and provides warmth. It is a religious symbol but it can also serve as a more general symbol of fortitude, of rebirth and unconditional love (hence its uses in pop culture, such as in tattoos). Already highly valued by the medieval Franciscan monks within the framework of various cults of Christ's wounds, St. Bonaventure wrote of it: "Who could help but love this wounded heart? Who would not return the love of he who loves so much?" However, at that time it was only the object of private devotion within the monastic order, not a popular and widespread phenomenon, as it became later.

The symbol of the Sacred Heart represents the heart of Jesus, to which Christians – especially in the Catholic Church – direct their prayers and devotion. It consists of a stylized heart (which has actually become more realistic in contemporary versions) with a burning flame on the top that represents the transformative power of divine love.
