The Wood Carvings known as Alebrijes continue to delight crowds with their whimsical designs and festive colors. Each figure is carved by hand in Oaxaca from the wood of the copal tree, often with nothing more than simple household knives and a machete. Afterwards, the figures are painted in stunning detail with a steady hand and brilliant acrylic colors.
