Time-Honored Talavera Sinks for Your Bath
April 23, 2014
Talavera sinks feature wonderfully intricate floral and animal patterns that will become the highlight of any bathroom decor! Although known for its beauty, Talavera has quite a historical background. Talavera is a type of majolica pottery, which is distinguished by a milky-white glaze and the tradition of production goes back to the 16th century. The process to create Talavera pottery is elaborate and it has basically not changed since the early colonial period when the craft was first introduced.
The ceramic of these Talavera sinks is hand-painted in Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico, and embodies all the classic charm of Mexican Talavera. The city of Dolores Hidalgo, was a small town known simply as Dolores when Father Miguel Hidalgo uttered his famous cry for the independence of Mexico (the Grito de Dolores) there in the early hours of September 16, 1810, in front of his parish church. It is the event that marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. After Mexico achieved independence, the town was renamed Dolores Hidalgo in his honor. Today the town of Dolores Hidalgo is known primarily for its ceramics industry, which provides income to well over half the city's population.
The durability of Talavera is apparent since it is mostly used to make utilitarian items such as plates, bowls, jars, flowerpots, sinks, religious items as well as decorative figures. The Talavera Sinks offered at La Fuente are self-rimming for easy installation and some designs come in more than one size. You'll also find that they feature a built-in drain hole (connects to the bottom drain internally), and have a plain white exterior and are durable for years and years of use.
As you have read above, you aren't just investing in a new bathroom sink; you're investing in an historical art form which supports many Mexican families.
