Textiles Can Be Used Many Ways at Home

February 3, 2018

You can add a splash of color, texture or ethnic culture to a room easily by adding some Textiles! For instance a new Zapotec rug, runner or placemat can make a huge impact on your space. The simple patterns and bold colors complement many decorating styles, from rustic to modern.

Every authentic Zapotec Wool Weaving offered by La Fuente Imports has been dyed and loomed by hand in the ancient village of Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca in Mexico. Each family in the village produces just one or two unique designs of high quality and durability, with most members of the family participating in some way. Sorting, spinning, dyeing, and weaving are all done in the home using predominantly traditional, organic dye materials, and all-natural shades of wool.

Another wonderful textile idea is to drape a Dhaka Weaving from Nepal over the back of a solid-colored sofa for an instant upgrade of color and pattern. Use it to add warmth and contrasting texture on a couch. For a casual accent, drape one diagonally over an armchair or a chaise lounge. Spread it fully over a chair or loveseat with worn upholstery. A handwoven Nepalese Weaving makes a colorful tablecloth. Use a folded weaving to embellish your headboard, the top of a dresser or the seat of a bench. Add some spice to a kitchen table with a serape tablecloth or fold it into a table runner. With every Dhaka you purchase, you are supporting women and families from impoverished areas of Nepal through our partnership with NAMLO International. By teaching women to produce traditional Nepali handicrafts, NAMLO is helping people and families earn much needed income and economic support for themselves and their communities.

Lay a serape out on a wood or tile floor for an eye-catching area rug. Drape it as an accent over the rung of a pole ladder leaned against the wall. If you’re crafty and have a sewing machine, you can turn a serape into other types of home accents, such as colorful pillow covers or placemats. Use the fabric to reupholster a chair or bench cushion. Sew tab tops on two serapes to make festive looking curtains. Frame leftover scraps to hang as wall art.
