Be Eclectic at Home

February 15, 2018

An eclectic home can employ a variety of styles as long as they fit the design story of the space. Mexican and southwest home accessories, folk art and furniture all fit together as Boho or Eclectic if you have a need to label it. Basically, it is mixing and not-matching the interior design items in your home – it is putting them all together proudly whether they "fit" together or not. They are almost always things that are special to you, often from your travels...or purchasing from your chair that gives your décor a well-traveled look.

Generally, southwest style is characterized by earth-tone colors, rough textures, and crafted objects, brightly colored woven fabrics, an abundance of terra cotta and clay tile roofs on the exterior. Perfect accents for adding a bit of southwest to the mix are: Talavera pottery, painted ceramic pieces with roots in 16th century Mexico, adds color and design interest to a desert home. Hand-painted tiles are used on walls, floors and countertops. Wrought iron is used for all types of accessories. If you wish to create a room or entire home featuring southwest then takes these things into consideration.

A great place to start any interior home changes are to paint the walls. A warm color that will serve as a backdrop for your eclectic room. For a bold look, choose an interior paint in a rich earth tone like brick or clay. If the dark walls are too much for you, opt for a warm neutral like sand or taupe. For a look of authenticity, use a faux paint technique to create the look of stucco or adobe. Google has a wealth of places that can help you find the right paint, for the right mood you are wishing to create.

Handmade Folk art from around the world can be interesting conversational pieces and adds that eclectic flavor you may be seeking. Day of the Dead figurines are one such folk art that many find enjoyable to collect. El Dia de Los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), can be celebrated all year long with our funky, handmade pieces of art! Handmade skeleton figures called "calacas" are also popular, as they depict an active and joyful afterlife. La Fuente Imports is proud to offer the largest variety of these figurines available anywhere on the web, some relatively simple but others painstakingly produced by hand, as well as many other unique Day of the Dead collections including: tiles, figures, night lights, shirts, sugar skull molds, gifts for kids and more.
